FREE Bagel, Biore sample, FREE PIZZA!

We've often been asked what our favorite freebie sites are, being that we do freebies, too. Although there are quite a select few that we subscribe to and get the newsletter, we've narrowed it down to about six or seven. One of our favorites is ……… our cool site of the day.

The Shock Coffee gift basket giveaway is going on, along with Chobani yogurt. Don't miss these giveaways!

How many of you guessed what the giveaway was? 22 guessed right but there were 28 of you that guessed wrong Frown  The answer, of course, was COFFEE. We had guesses of hot sauce, milk, hot chocolate, tea and a few others. Remember, if you guessed right, you have 10 entries for the giveaway basket from Shock Coffee.

That Bloomin' Onion

One of the favorites of Outback Steakhouse is the Bloomin' Onion. Although no one can make it quite like the Aussies..here's a good copycat recipe.

Prep time: 35 minutes

Total time: 1 hour

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

For the dipping sauce:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons ketchup
2 tablespoons cream-style horseradish
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
Dash ground black pepper
Dash cayenne pepper
For the onion:
1 large egg
1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
1/8 teaspoon cumin
1 jumbo sweet yellow or white onion ( 3/4 pound or more)
Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

To make the dipping sauce: In a small mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, salt, oregano, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Set aside or chill until ready to use.

For the onion: In a medium bowl big enough to hold the onion, whisk together the egg and milk until well-combined. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, peppers, paprika, oregano, thyme and cumin.

To cut the onion: First slice 3/4 inch to 1 inch off the top and bottom of onion. Remove papery skin. Use a thin knife to cut a 1-inch diameter core out of the middle of the onion. Use a very sharp, large knife, preferably with a thin blade, to slice the onion several times down the center to create the "petals." First slice through the center of the onion to about 3/4 of the way down. Turn the onion 90 degrees and slice it again in an X across the first slice. Keep slicing the sections in half, very carefully, until you've cut the onion 16 times. Do not cut down to the bottom.

Spread apart the petals. The onion sections tend to stick together, so you'll want to separate them to make coating easier. To help separate the petals, plunge the onion into boiling water for 1 minute and then into cold water.

Dip the onion in the milk mixture, and then coat it liberally with the dry ingredients. Again separate the petals and sprinkle the dry coating between them. When the onion is well-coated, dip it back into the wet mixture and into the dry coating again. Let the onion rest in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes while you get the oil ready.

Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep pot to 350 degrees. Make sure you use enough oil to cover the onion completely.

Fry onion right side up for 10 minutes or until it turns brown.

Remove and drain on a rack or paper towels.

Open the onion wider from the center so you can place a small dish of the dipping sauce in the center.

Note:

Cutting the onion to make it bloom is the trick here, and starting with a symmetrical one helps. You might want to buy several more than you need, in order to practice.

Save Money Grocery Shopping

I know that this list seems self explanatory but I'm surprised that so many people don't follow some of these simple tips.

  1. Shop for produce at a local farm stand.
  2. Never buy coffee, soda, or other drinks or snacks out.
  3. Always grocery shop with a list.
  4. NEVER shop when you're hungry.
  5. Take advantage of sales on items that you would normally buy.
  6. Only shop once a month.
  7. Keep a price book and track prices by unit cost.
  8. Stockpile staples when prices are low.
  9. Buy generic items.
  10. Plan meals according to what is on sale that week.
  11. Take advantage of rainchecks if the store doesn't have a sale item that you need. Publix is my favorite for this one.
  12. Take advantage of rebates at Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid…but only if you'll use the item and will follow through on the rebate.
  13. Buy enough of a sale item to last 12 weeks. That's about how long sales take to cycle.
  14. Shop at discount marts: Grocery outlet, The Dollar Store, etc.
  15. Bring your own bags to the grocery store. Many stores offer a small discount per bag.
  16. Take advantage of stores that double coupons.
  17. Take advantage of BOGO only if you'll need the item and can stockpile it.
  18. Watch out for deals on things that your friends need, and have them do the same for you.

Do you have any frugal living tips you'd like to share? Drop us a note and we might feature your tip in this section! Plus, you'll be eligible to win in our monthly $25 drawing.

(Not for the squeamish)

A fascinating fact about ants is that some species send their queen into neighboring nests, where she will bite the head off the resident queen and begin laying her own eggs to take over.

On average, sharks kill 10 humans every year. But here is the thing: approximately 100 people die each year when they are stepped on by cows. Remember that next time you are in a field of cattle.

Woodpeckers slam their heads into wood at a rate of 20 pecks per second. What protects them from injury is a spongy area that sits behind their beaks and acts as a shock absorber.

In the seventeenth century, when anti-Catholicism and anti-papacy was rife throughout the puritan world, puritans would stuff wicker effigies of the Pope with live cats and then set it on fire – taking much glee in the screaming anguish of the poor cats.

Unlike most animals, the word for butterfly in European languages do not resemble each other. In German it is schmetterling, in French it is papillon, in Spanish it is mariposa, in Italian it is farfalla, in Dutch it is vlinder, and in portuguese it is borboleta.

To vomit, some frogs spew out their entire stomach, rinse it off with their right hand, and then push it back in.

The hoatzin (pronounced watseen) bird is a vegetarian which, due to its strict vegetable diet, has stomachs similar to a cows to help it digest. The need for large amounts of food makes these birds very heavy, and consequently bad fliers. The rather beautiful bird is pictured above.

Manatees have two teets beneath their forelimbs, which is very likely to be the cause of the many tales of mermaids heard around the world in the days of great sea voyages.

Here is one for all the animal rights activists. The giant tortoise was often killed for its delicious oil, which was considered by the Dutch the only way to make the flesh of the now extinct Dodo bird palatable. The flesh of the giant turtle is sufficient to feed several men and virtually every part of it is a taste sensation (including the bone marrow and eggs).

Tappen is the name given to a plug made of leaves, resin and fat which bears prepare and insert into their rectum prior to their three months winter dormition. This is to stop insects from intruding and laying their eggs.

An ant chamber can be up to 10 feet deep. Each chamber within the vast network is designed for a different task. The bottom chamber is for eggs, while others are for larvae, the queen, new queens and food storage.

Bats manage to hang upside down with ease because their claws lock on to the branch or object from which they hang. When a bat dies like this, it stays in place with its toes locked.

The double headed Eagle symbol of the byzantine empire has a special meaning. One head symbolizes old Imperial Rome, and the other symbolizes Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine empire, and colloquially known as the New Rome.

The giant weta is a New Zealand insect which can grow a body (excluding legs) to the size of a mouse. It is also, on average, heavier than a sparrow. It is rather a horrifying looking creature, but unlike its also quite large relatives which are found all over New Zealand, the giant weta is confined to small islands. The picture above shows an adult human holding a weta, which gives a good indication of its size. Wetas are harmless and only bite when in danger.
