Can you believe it is MAY? Where has this year gone, already? Lots of stuff going on in May, like Mother's Day, kids graduating, getting out of school for the summer, proms….WOW.

There are many "holidays" in May; one of the more special ones happens to be May 4th, which is National Teacher's Day. Be a part of showing that special educator how much you appreciate them.

Of course, there are also some lesser known events in May. May 1st, for example, is:

Homemade Corndogs

Ingredients

1 pack of your favorite hotdogs
1 box Jiffy Cornmeal mix
8 disposal chopsticks or saved corndog sticks
Directions

  • Thicken the cornbread by adding the liquid (usually milk or buttermilk) a little at a time until you have a very thick pancake batter consistency.
  • Pour it into a tall drinking glass.
  • Heat a pot of oil or your deep fryer to about 375°F.
  • Skewer your favorite, juicy beefy hot dog with a disposable stick, pat it dry then dip it into the drinking glass, turning to coat completely. If you find the coating isn't sticking to the hotdog, you can roll the hotdog in flour, first.
  • Immediately place battered weiner into the hot oil, turning as necessary to brown all sides evenly.  It will only take a few minutes for the corn bread to cook and brown.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

You can usually make 16-20 corndogs with 1 pack of jiffy mix but if you only use one pack of hotdogs, you can refrigerate the leftover mix.

The breakdown cost is roughly $0.30/each. These are great when put in the freezer. Just let them cool after cooking, then separate them with wax paper and freeze. Pop them in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes and you have a great snack or meal!

The above recipe illustrates things you can do to be frugal. Not only is making your own more cost effective, you can control the quality of ingredients, as well.

If you can find recipes to make your own things, from ketchup to toothpaste, your money will go much farther.

Another benefit is getting the kids involved. Let them help make things. It gives them something to do, you're spending time and interacting with them and teaching them frugal ways.
